Encouraging Your Kids to Play Outside
Hooray it’s summertime! The summertime gives our kids time to relax, but also to explore and spend time outside in the warm sun. Parents are perusing the internet looking for activities to keep their young ones busy. Many times, moms and dads feel like their children’s Activity Director. “Attention passengers on the kitchen deck we will be making animals out of playdough and off the port side we will be running through sprinklers.” Unfortunately today, many parents spend most of their time trying to get their children to put down their technological devices.
I know it is not easy sometimes to get your children to put down the iPad, phones, computers, or controllers and go play outside. Whether you keep the TV on all the time or the whole family sits around staring at their smartphones, too much screen time could be harmful. So, let’s get them moving and exploring outside!
Outside playtime only needs to be encouraged and sometimes insisted on by the “Activities Director”. One of the best things you can do for your kids this summer is to encourage independent play in your own backyard! “Attention passengers, it is time for play on the Aloha Deck, otherwise known as the backyard. “Please enjoy the slide, swings, dirt, grass and fresh air, and feel free to experiment, examine and imagine whatever you’d like.” “As Director I will be there only to keep you safe and answer any intelligent questions.”
Fun is Our Middle Name
What is independent play? It is when children play alone with a parent nearby but only for their safety not for instruction. Yes, children can become play dependent. Playing independently from a parent helps prepare a child for other events wherein a parent will not be involved, or even present. It can actually be calming for a child, it encourages problem-solving, and really boosts their imaginations and confidence. So, give your kids time to play independently. Let them use their own ideas and imaginations to direct their play and navigate problems with their play implementations on their own.
BONUS ALERT! While your kids are playing independently, you get the chance to enjoy a book, a phone call, a cup of tea or just relax. Engaging in self-care is also important to model for your children.
Your own backyard is a perfect place for independent play. Our children’s days are so structured today sometimes they even need time and practice to play independently. It is important for your children to be able to imagine, engage and plan their own playtime when needed.
Our playsets are a wonderful way to encourage independent play. We offer many accessories, slides, swings, lemonade stand, sandbox, rock walls, toys, games, too many to even list. We can customize a set designed just for your family’s wants and needs. Call us today!
