Cuddle up for some backyard stargazing!
August 2023 is an incredible month to watch the night sky!
When you go outside on a clear night you can’t help but to tilt your head back and look up at the stars. Since the beginning of time, we have admired the beauty of the night sky. We are fascinated by the moon slices and the twinkling stars. The night sky is full of adventures and curiosities. Stargazing is an easy and great way to encourage a love for learning in your children.
Why not explore the night sky with your children with a Stargazing Party! In today’s fast paced world, it is sometimes hard to find the time and place to wind down, with your kids. Why not do this in your own backyard! Just bring lots of blankets and pillows to snuggle up in. Place them on the deck of your playset, lie back, and explore the stars together.
There are various things you can bring if you want, depending on what ages your children are. Older children might want a telescope to find the various constellations. Younger children would enjoy just talking about the moon and its many phases. Most importantly is to share in your children’s curiosity and to make great memories of family times together.
Various Stargazing Tools you might bring.
- Flashlight to find your way around
- A good sky map (NASA’s printable star map – https://nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov/download-view.cfm?Doc_ID=335)
- Binoculars
- Compass (used to find North)
- Telescope
These things will help you to gaze at these celestial sights more clearly and closer up.
“Star light, star bright. First star I see tonight…”
Things To Know first
- Best time to stargaze is when there is little or no moonlight.
- Find an area away from street or city lights if possible.
- Give your eyes a half hour to adjust to the darkness.
- When using a good star map there is no limit to what you can find.
- Planets do not twinkle like stars.
- Most importantly – a parent must be there side by side with the child/ren
I remember with great fondness the memories of my dad helping me to find the North Star, and the Big and Little Dippers. I was so amazed he knew their names and it was magical to explore the sky together. Incredible memories sometimes just happen but other times they are made. Made with a beautiful night sky and some time to explore with Mom and Dad. Just lie back, relax, and let wonderment fill the night.
