Two Full Supermoons in August
PLAN AHEAD AND HAVE SOME FUN!
Yes! There will be 2 full supermoons this August 2023, and the first one is AUGUST 1st, so plan ahead! It will have not one but two full moons, and both are Supermoons! So every two and a half years, we see two full moons in one month. The second full moon is called a “Blue Moon.” So, the saying “once in a blue moon” means that something is not common and does not happen often. These times are great for backyard fun family times!
The Sturgeon Moon – August 1st, Tuesday – 1:31 pm peak (Texas)
August’s full Moon was traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer. The best time to view it will be after sunset from a place with a clear view of the southeast, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.
The Blue Moon – August 30th, Wednesday – 8:35 pm peak (Texas)
August 30-31 super moon will be the closest, biggest, and brightest full super moon of 2023. It’s exceptionally close in Moon miles from Earth (222,043 miles). The next time we’ll have a closer full super moon is November 5, 2025, when the moon lies 221,817 miles from Earth. Also according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

As adults most of us go through our lives not really thinking about the full moon anymore. Life is so busy, and by the time we have become parents we just enjoy them once or maybe twice a year when we get caught between the moon and the activities of the day. But full moons are a great time for backyard games and family time!
Why stay up a little later with the kids in the middle of the week?!?! Because it’s FUN, and families that have fun together make memories. There is a chance to learn some science things and to just enjoy the magnificence of our world. Show the kiddos it is sometimes okay to break from the norms and to jump around and have fun or to sit quietly and hear the frogs croak and the dogs bark and the light-hearted giggles of our family. Below are some fun activities you can plan for your family to enjoy the light of the moons!
Games for Backyard Fun during the Full Moons
1. Tell the Kids The Plan: Let them know you are planning Super Moon Fun. Let the excitement grow as they watch the moon growing in the days to come.
2. Explore The Night Sky: You don’t have to have a telescope to see the full moon! The full moon is the easiest body out there to observe in the night sky. The surface of the moon is covered with massive craters and inactive volcanoes.
3. Hide and Seek: Take turns hiding something others have to find. (a ball, a hat or something that glows in the dark) It’s not as dark as most nights which makes it a little safer to run around looking.
4. Glow In The Dark Games: Buy a glow in the dark football to throw around. See who can stack the best pyramid with glow in the dark cups. There are so many glow in the dark games you can buy ahead of time. Everything from glowing soccer balls to safe lawn darts you toss into a glowing circle. Plan a game your family will have fun with depending on their ages.
“Fun is Our Middle Name”
5. Roast Marshmallows: It’s a great time to talk about fire safety with your children. With the full moon shining there will be plenty of light start a little fire. Most of us today have some sort of fire-pit. Gather the kids around and let them watch you from the beginning until the end of starting the fire. IMPORTANT – Be lighthearted Answer their questions. You just need a tiny fire for your family to roast a marshmallow. Then sit around and tell stories and enjoy being together as a family at home.
6. Gather Around Your BFF Playset: Not only do our playsets have forts and swings, climbing walls and all kinds of accessories…..we also have decks and platforms great for laying back and looking at the night sky.
We at Backyard Fun Factory really enjoy Backyard Fun. Imagine that! Haha Our redwood playsets can become a big part of your backyard family fun. Our playsets begin to feel like part of the family, and we love that. A place you can gather around or upon with your sleeping bags. A place your family can cuddle up, lay back, and explore the moon and stargaze.
