Family Fun with a Backyard Water Park
It’s summer break and the heat is rising! Kids need to get outside and exercise those little muscles but it’s just soooo HOT! Water parks are anywhere from $17 to $25 per person. So for a family of 4 to go to the water park will cost you between $68-$100! And we aren’t counting food and drinks for the day. Yikes, and that’s for just ONE day of fun?!?
Let me show you how to have a water park in your own backyard! A great idea is to have backyard fun in the mornings and/or the evenings. During the hottest part of the day, the hours between 12-4 pm, the kids can stay inside for chore time and nap time. Here are some easy and relatively simple ideas your kids will have fun with everyday at home!
Play is the highest form of research! -Albert Einstein
- Sunscreen Dancing – Kids always fuss about standing still for sunscreen. Play your children’s favorite tunes and have them dance into their sunscreen. You can use spray sunscreen or put the lotion on their hands. Who can do the best job covering themselves with sunscreen?
- Ice Treasures – Take some of your children’s little plastic toys and put them in a bucket or bowl. Cover them with water and freeze them. Take them outside. Your kids will have a blast chipping the ice to free the treasure!
- Easy Pool Noodle Sprinkler – Must Haves 1. Pool Noodle 2, DUCT tape 3. Skewer 4. Water hose 5. Foam or Medicine bottle to fill the hole on one end. Just stick the water hose into one end of the noodle and secure with Duct tape (get the real Duct tape for best results) Use the skewer or ice pick to make holes in the noodle. You need to fill the other end of the noodle with something (foam, medicine bottle, a small ball) then tape really well with DUCT tape. Turn on the hose for great summer fun and a colorful backyard sprinkler!

- Sprinkler Swinging – Easy Peasy one. Put a sprinkler under the swings for the kids to swing through. There is nothing more fun!
- Playset Water Balloon Target Game – Get a big tub and fill it with water balloons. Set up targets with numbers on them all over the playset. You can use this game to teach the younger kids their numbers and keep the targets low or put values on the targets and the older kids will have fun hitting the higher targets. The higher the target the more the value. Have the older kids keep their own score or have a scorekeeper. If they miss the target and their balloon doesn’t pop….they have to pop it on their head.
- Water Hose Limbo – Who needs a long limbo stick? Not Us! Just use your water hose. Hold the water hose where the water makes an arc the kids can go under. Don’t forget to play the Limbo song so they can have fun dancing as they lean back to get under the water arc. https://youtu.be/T54zrvXYob4
“Time in nature is not a luxury. It is a necessity. And we must give our children time to explore, discover, and get to know the world, which brings endless delights and lessons that never cease.” -Ainsley Arment
- Squirt Balloon Game – Blow up balloons with air. Everyone gets a balloon and a water gun. 123 start the game. They throw the balloon up and keep it in the air with their squirt gun. The last balloon to hit the ground wins!
- Marbles & Toes Game – Throw some marbles into a little kiddie pool. Put a bucket next to the pool. The kids grab the marbles with their toes and put them in the bucket. Lots of fun and great exercise for strong feet!
