City Park Slides of Yesteryear….

My friends and I grew up in the 70s and 80s.  We got together the other day and started talking about the rough and tumble city playgrounds of yesteryear.  We all remembered the “Big Slide” at our neighborhood parks. Oh, those crazy tall metal slides. One of the scariest parts of the tall slides was just climbing up the ladder.  The children behind you pushing and yelling “Hurry up, hurry up!”   Then you get to the top and slide after the sun has done it’s work.  “And as you would slide down, you would feel the HEAT of your bad decision”, someone said as we all laughed. Yes, we remembered how it burned the back of our legs.   “Didn’t our parents love us?” somebody chuckled.

Of course, our parents loved us and we knew that they did.  But city parks were the place we went for thrilling experiences, heights, and high speed.  And many of us ended up with the broken arms to prove it. Haha

Today, many city parks suffer from poor maintenance, poor design, and poor security.  Parents need to be watching for broken pieces, apparatus with poor structure, and most importantly for “creepers” visiting the park.
