7 Ways to Make Your Backyard Safe for Your Kids
In the crazy world of today, your own backyard makes a great place for your children to play safely. There are however a few things you need to do to make it safer.
- Boundaries & supervision – A fenced backyard is ideal of course. If you don’t have a fenced yard, teach your children the boundaries where they should play. Never allow your children to play unattended. Children push their boundaries daily. (lol) You need to know this to keep them safe.
- Kid-friendly Ground Surface – Children will typically be rolling, flipping, tumbling and falling in the backyard. Grass would be best but not always possible. Rock surfaces will be hard on knees, hands and little bodies. If these rocks are sharp they may even lead to ER visits; so look for, and remove them. A popular upgrade we have seen is adding turf to the backyard, it is a beautiful upgrade, but can be pricey.
Fun is Our Middle Name
- Dangerous Plants – Inspect all the plants creeping into your backyard. Teach your children to never eat berries or leaves from a plant unless Mom or Dad says it’s ok. Plants are the leading cause of poisoning among preschoolers. If you are unsure about the plants in your yard, call the Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222) and request a list of poisonous plants common to your area. Many plants are poisonous.
- Lawn Mowers and tools – Never mow your lawn around your kids playing. Mowers can throw out sticks or stones with enough force to injure them. Tools of all sorts peak a child’s curiosity. Be sure and keep your household tools and even your yard tools locked up to prevent accidents.
- Lawn & Garden Chemicals – The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that when herbicides or pesticides are used in your backyard, it is best to use only organic-approved products. And to not let your children play on a newly treated backyard for forty-eight hours.
- Hot Grills – Oh how we love to cook outside on the grill! It can be a wonderful time to make great memories. However, children can be burned if you’re not paying attention. Teach your children to stay away from the grill when playing and explain to toddlers that it’s HOT like the kitchen stove. And of course, make sure any charcoal used is cold before dumping it.
Safety is our #1 Priority
- Playground Equipment – Our playsets are very safe. Our playsets and equipment are built to meet strict safety standards and are constructed with the highest-quality materials. However, we do recommend you inspect the playset before each play season. Check for any loose hardware or any issues with the wooden components. Look for sharp objects or dangerous items children have placed in the play area. We recommend children wear clothes without drawstrings or cords. Drawstrings, purses, and necklaces could get caught on equipment and pose a safety hazard.
