Swings can be for everyone, both adults and children. Swings for a child are one of very few activities that is calming for a child. Yes it’s true! It’s scientific. It helps them with sensory integration. Yep, it literally helps the brain to process information. It helps them to calm themselves and to stay focused.
So yeah, if your kids have these problems let’em swing but that’s not what I’m here to tell ya. If it helps THEM than it’s bound to help US too! Parents need to remain calm quite often and if we don’t stay focused it could be disastrous! As swings are for everyone. Examples to follow…
Example 1: Toddler Years
THEM: Your 3 year old lifts her precious little baby hand up to you and smiles sweetly. You adore your little one and grab that delicate hand up to your mouth and just eat it all up, yum yum yummy yum. She giggles then examines one finger and inquisitively asks “Where’d my boogie go?”
US: As your brain snaps painfully to reality, and the juices in your mouth begin to send their harrowing messages to your stomach you should probably go swing. It will help you to remain calm and you can focus on keeping things down. If unsuccessful you can just lean to one side and keep on swinging. No mess no fuss!
Example 2: Elementary Years
THEM: When you take your 1st grade son to a medical checkup and he leans over while the doctor is examining him and ummm lets one rip. You admonish him and say, “Excuse me, what do you say son?” and instead of saying “Excuse me” he owns his mistake proudly by raising his hand high and saying “I farted!” Before you decide on a new pediatrician, you should probably go swing. Calm yourself, focus on the humor of it all and relax.
Example 3: Intermediate Years
THEM: It’s the big baseball playoff game and you rush home throw your 4th grade son’s game bag in the car as he jumps in. You are running late and praying he even gets to play. Already you’ve missed the warm-up and are arriving just in time for his team to take the field. You celebrate as your son walks out to right field, “YES, he’s going to get to play!” Your celebration is cut short as you hear the crowd laughing and see them pointing towards your son. Realizing you’re just in time to watch him tilt his head back to see if anyone is watching as he relieves himself onto the right field fence. You do remember him saying, “Wow, I really need to go!”. Oh boy, you thought he meant to the game. Then slink over to the car to watch the game. Maybe before the next game you should take time to swing. It will help you to relax, slow down, re-organize your game day plans and focus on the “little things” that need to be taken care of. It really does work…just saying.
Example 4: Teenage Years
THEM: When your teenage daughter makes a crying confession. She will fail her English class unless she can turn in 4 essays she “forgoootttt” about tomorrow morning. It is 8pm and you realize you will be the author of at least 3 of these essays and sleeping is not going to happen, if at all, not anytime soon. You should definitely go swing. You should think about how helping her write the essays would be cheating. Think about teaching your daughter how you won’t be the one to SAVE her. Then.. calm down and focus on the topics and cliff notes you should read before you begin writing the first essay. Feel your body calm with the sway and rocking motion of the swing, back and forth, back and forth. Now go get busy, you got this!
