Playsets promote imaginative play
“Shiver me timbers”, said Jason as he spots the shark right below the wooden ladder. The dangerous shark is circling his pirate ship. He jumps out with his make-believe sword and strikes the shark scaring it away. “Ahoy Matey”, he says as he helps the young maiden Jessica onto the playset ship who is now safe from the circling shark. He looks out over the vast ocean filled with waves. Jessica looks puzzled at her big brother as he helps her climb the wooden ladder draw bridge onto her beautiful princess castle. “Fank you my Pwince” she smiled. Jessica straightens her crown and looks out over her land and the people of the Kingdom and waves. Jason Blackbeard and Princess Jessica begin another day of adventure.
Imaginative play is not only a lot of fun but it’s also vital to childhood development and should be encouraged.
Imaginative play promotes…
1. Physical Development – Imaginative play includes the whole body. It combines running, skipping, climbing, crawling or a whole range of other movements. Through play children are building muscle, learning new skills, and improving both their fine and gross motor skills.
2. Fosters Creativity – When children use their imaginations in play it helps to grow their creative skills. Children create stories around characters they love and become a part of the story. Other children extend on the plot they have created. Together, they will work out problems that arise along the way. They will take objects around them and turn them into something else entirely for their stories.
3. Teaches Social Skills – They learn to play together, take turns, and have empathy for other children. They will learn to solve problems together using cooperative play.
Fun is Our Middle Name
4. Encourages Problem Solving – Acting out scenarios helps children learn problem-solving skills as they solve issues that arise, either real or as part of their story while they pretend play.
5. Improves language Development – With Imaginative Play children can be whomever they wish. They may pretend to be a pirate, a princess, a king, a knight, a fireman or any one of many personalities they have seen or read about. Researchers have discovered that children engaged in pretend play often use higher forms of language than they would use in normal situations.
Our children live in a technological world today. Technology is a two-dimensional world, but children seem to learn best in a world they can not only hear but touch, see, smell, and even manipulate.
We as adults can often under value imaginative play and playing outdoors. Play is a child’s way of engaging and making sense of the world. Role play may appear to be a very simple activity, yet within it, young children will learn many practical life skills.
